i keep seeing people comment like “everyone starts somewhere” and im here to tell ya somethin, i’m a self taught makeup artist i started at sephora when i was 18 years old and worked my way up since then i’ve worked with 3 different companies in various areas in the makeup industry from freelancing to events teams to brand repping to training and education to standing at a counter for 9 hours hustling to make numbers, i’ve done a lot, i have experience i’ve been trained to the point where i can and will call myself a makeup artist because i’ve been trained and taken under the wing of some great people who didn’t want me to make a fool of myself, people who didn’t want me to let a person leave my makeup chair feeling worse off, people including clients who’ve taught me how work with their skin and tips on how they personally do their eye makeup.
you guys who keep saying “everyone is an artist! everyone starts somewhere” dont know shit, honestly, i work with people to this day who REFUSE to learn how to do makeup on people with monolids and/or how to do makeup on people with deeper skin tones. they don’t know how some shades of eyeshadow will turn gray on certain skin tones they don’t know a “nude” lipstick is different for everyone, they don’t know that a smokey eye on a person with monolids looks different than someone with hooded eyes and then they have the nerve to get MAD when someone requests someone who looks like them do do their makeup! these “artists” act like the client is saying that they can’t do their job when they PROBABLY CAN’T i’ve been in the business 5 years and i would never claim that i can do a black girls makeup better than a black girl can because it goes beyond that 5 second interaction it goes beyond me wanting to prove myself or whatever, it has to do with distrust and people who aren’t white have the right to distrust me and the industry as a whole because the whole damn industry has failed them. it’s bigger than this “everyone is an artist” bullshit, the industry itself does not cater to people who aren’t white, it doesn’t, it’s a fact don’t try to tell me “some brands” are more “inclusive” and have a bigger “shade range” because i’ve seen people of at least 20 different skin tones get matched to NC 45 and sent on their day.
everyone starts somewhere of course, i started doing makeup on myself and family members, people that look like me, that’s how i got into makeup and how i started to take it more seriously but it doesn’t just stop there, i had to be WILLING to learn once i got a job in the industry i have to be willing to take criticism and turn it around even 5 years into it, the same as every fucking industry… if i was a chef at an italian restaurant and i didn’t know how to boil pasta and i served your meal to you raw as shit would you be like “yea well at least u tried every1 is a chef” NO ! you would expect me to do my job to the best of my ability and if i couldn’t learn how or if i refused to learn how i shouldn’t call myself what i’m not and you shouldn’t fucking encourage it.
Expose them
If you are a professional makeup artist and can’t do makeup on dark skin tones or different types of eyelids, YOU AIN’T SHIT. You are not a real makeup artist. You are a cheat. You get paid to do subpar work on people who don’t know any better. Stop defending them.
